Why School at Home?

Reasons for schooling at home vary:

  • more choice for your children
  • a more wholesome environment
  • more individual attention
Reasons for families school at home are as diverse as the families who embrace it. Whatever your reasons for homeschooling, we hope to support you in your journey here. Legal requirements vary by state and province, and can be difficult to navigate. Once you've jumped that hurdle, how do you know you're doing the "right" thing? Which curriculum (if any) will you choose? How will you schedule your day (if at all)? Are there resources available (YES)? What are they? Is it expensive? How will you continue to work and homeschool your child? What about online education?

Creativity and Education

At I School at Home, we all school at home. Mom, Dad, and all four boys are still in school. So we are committed to life long learning! One thing that we have all learned through trial and error is that there is a definite connection between true life long learning success and creativity. We all love Sir Ken Robbins. He's an expert on creativity and education who believes strongly in school reform. We couldn't agree more. While we're waiting for school reform though, we just keep right on learning! Take a look at this video for a good introduction of Sir Ken and his ideas.

Embracing Online School

At the moment, all six of us are at school online! I am pursuing my Master's of Science in Mental Health Counseling degree at Walden University, my husband is doing coursework to become a Master Brewer (at the moment he's a Brewmaster) and my kids' school is an independent distance school called Self Design. On top of this, my eldest son is learning his math through the Khan Academy, which is fast becoming a favorite in our household. It's brand new territory for sure, but our family is convinced that online school is changing the landscape of education forever.
